The Checkup That Helps Carry the Message
When I was new to AA, we used to have a lot of 12th-step calls: people calling our office for help with their alcoholism. The office would then call the secretary of a group in the caller’s zip code. He or she would in turn call someone from their roster who would answer the call, and, together with another person, go to meet with them. They’d hopefully get them to a meeting or perhaps treatment facility.
The callers’ lives truly depended on the office’s ability to reach the active secretary of those groups. These calls are rarer now. It’s easier for those in need of our help to find a meeting or detox without our help—BUT THEY STILL EXIST.
The office’s need for an up-to-date list of secretaries was AND IS still critical.
Because of this the fine print at the end of our printed meeting schedules said:
When a new secretary is appointed in your place, please report it promptly to the office.
In other words, one of your last jobs as a group secretary was to get your replacements contact information reported to the office. This made sense because you are most likely more comfortable doing this than your replacement would be.
Everyone, whether you’re a secretary or not, please check your home group’s info via our new lookup.
It will only report the first letter of the first and last name of the secretary and treasurer to maintain anonymity.
Report any changes to [email protected] or by calling Bruce by phone: (216) 241-7387 Ext: 105. Your attention to this is most appreciated. One member handled maintenance for a major company. He was fond of saying, “I can’t fix it, if I don’t know it’s broke!”
