Does AA allow students to observe a meeting?

Thank you for your interest in observing an AA meeting as part of your coursework.

Because personal anonymity and confidentiality are fundamental principles within Alcoholics Anonymous, each AA group is autonomous and makes its own decisions regarding visitors and observers. The Cleveland District Office is not able to grant permission on behalf of individual groups.

That said, many groups welcome visitors at “Open” meetings, which are intended for anyone interested in learning more about AA. I would recommend reviewing the meeting listings on our website and attending a meeting designated with the Open meeting type.

As a reminder, we ask all visitors to respect the anonymity and confidentiality of AA members. If someone happens to invite you to share during the meeting, it is perfectly acceptable to simply say, “I’m just here to listen.”

Best of luck with your studies!
