I’m a college student required to attend an AA meeting

Can I attend an AA meeting for a class assignment?

Yes. Students are welcome to attend Open AA meetings as observers. Open meetings are available to anyone interested in learning more about Alcoholics Anonymous, including students, family members, and professionals.

Because personal anonymity and confidentiality are fundamental principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, each AA group is autonomous and makes its own decisions regarding visitors and observers. The Cleveland District Office cannot grant permission on behalf of individual groups, but many groups are happy to welcome visitors at Open meetings.

Can I attend any AA meeting?

Please attend an Open meeting. Closed meetings are reserved only for people who have a desire to stop drinking.

Do I need to introduce myself if the meeting asks if there are any newcomers?

No. If you are attending only as an observer for a school assignment, you do not need to raise your hand or introduce yourself as a newcomer. That invitation is intended for individuals who are attending because they believe they may have a drinking problem.

If you are invited to share during the meeting, it is perfectly acceptable to simply say, “I’m just here to listen.”

How should I conduct myself during the meeting?

Out of respect for those attending for their recovery, we ask that students simply observe unless invited to participate by the meeting chair. Please also respect the anonymity and confidentiality of all AA members.

Can someone sign my attendance form?

Many meetings are willing to sign attendance verification forms after the meeting. However, each AA group decides its own policy.

Please ask respectfully. In most cases, you can give your attendance form to the meeting chair before the meeting begins and pick it up after the meeting has ended.

We hope your visit provides a better understanding of Alcoholics Anonymous, and we wish you the best with your studies.
